I have a head for business and accounting but my heart longs for sewing and the creativity that spurns from selecting fabrics. I come from a long line of seamstresses and have been sewing in one form or another since early childhood. I won the Home Economics Award during my Senior year recognizing the various projects I completed throughout my high school years. I received a brand new White sewing machine as a gift shortly before graduation that is now not so new but still in daily use! I enjoy teaching basic apparel, sewing, beginner quilts as well as purses. I have recently designed a few patterns and enjoy helping students create masterpieces of their own. In my spare time I enjoy spending time at the coast with my family as well as reading, crochet and needlepoint.

Quilting became another art outlet for me in 2010 when my mother opened Ladybug's Cottage. In the very beginning I didn't even know how to sew but with my artistic eye was able to assist in fabric selection and now a year later I have completed 4 quilts myself and about a dozen more quilt tops as well as numerous purses and wall hangings. I have learned so much from our instructors and customers that I feel the need to share my fresh knowledge with others. I started the Kids Club with one student and a year later it has blossomed into eight students divided into two sessions. I enjoy teaching purse classes as well and hope to teach appliqué techniques soon. I have recently written a couple of patterns and will continue to design as new ideas come to me. I am a thrifty mom that enjoys couponing, reading, and just about any type of craft you can dream up.
Sheri Elderfield, Quilting Instructor
I first learned to sew during fourth grade Home Economics in California. I received my first sewing machine as my college graduation present and sewed suits as well as other clothing. I began quilting in 1989 after watching Simply Quilts on TV and deciding, "I can do that!" I found that I have a natural affinity for geometry, and could pretty much reconstruct any pattern I saw just from looking at it. I am very eager to share my love of quilting with my students at Ladybug's Cottage.
Carol Gates, Quilting Instructor
I have loved to play with fabric, thread and yarn for as long as I can remember. Though my mother was busy raising 5 girls and helping run my father's farm, she somehow had time to teach us to embroider, knit, crochet and sew. Through the years I have tried almost all the 'domestic arts', but quilting is my favorite. Why is it so satisfying to cut out lots of beautiful pieces of fabric just so I can sew them back together again? I'm not totally sure, but I do know that I love every step of the quilting process and am even a little sad when I finish a quilt, just like you may feel at the end of a great book that you almost didn't want to end. Fortunately, it is really easy to make myself feel better - go straight to Ladybug's Cottage and buy fabric for my next project! Now that my 2 daughters are away at school, I have time for both my passions: running and quilting; and I do as much as I can of each activity. I am so excited about teaching classes at Ladybug's Cottage. I am having a wonderful time teaching, learning and quilting while getting to know many wonderful people. It is so much fun to meet with other quilters and create something beautiful.
Laura Miller, Quilting Instructor
I began sewing in Home Economics in 8th grade and found that I really enjoyed the process of sewing and making my clothes. After marriage, my 2 sons were born and working full time, my "sewing" turned into "mending" their clothes and an occasional craft project. In 2000, I made a simple quilt for a children's charity when quilting lessons were taught at Green Pines Baptist Church. Seeing the color dance and intermingle in the quilt made my heart sing! That, coupled with the fact that someone would cuddle and cherish the quilt I made for them, sent me into a quilt ministry. I retired in 2001 so I had time for a creative outlet! I was also inspired by watching, "Simply Quilts" -- Alex Anderson's instructional program on HGTV -- and learned simple techniques. While I was at Hancock's one day in 2002 and asking opinions about fabric choices for a quilt, I met Terry Baker a member of Undercover Quilters Bee. I am an active member of that Bee. I've been a member of Capital Quilters Guild since 2003. I truly enjoy the kindred spirits of quilters. As I teach quilting, I always enjoy learning from other quilters.
Cathy Smith, Quilting Instructor
I started sewing when I was in the seventh grade, making most of my clothes throughout high school. I even designed a few of my own creations! College saw a break from sewing. When I had my children and was working full-time, sewing became my evening relaxation. I started quilting in the 80's, making some decent items but it wasn't until 2005 when I move to Zebulon that I learned what quilting was really about. I've taken classes and joined a bee as well as the Capital Quilters' Guild. Unable to find a job after applying over 100 times, I've decided to try quilting and sewing as my occupation. I like to make quilts that will be put to use. I've been doing craft show for about 14 years and will soon have my own website. My hope is to teach new quilters techniques that will make their entry into the quilting world smoother and less frustrating. I also quilt finished tops, make customized quilts and tee-shirt quilts and do clothing alteration.
Dottie Vester, Instructor My mother and grandmother taught me to embroider and sew as a child. As the years have passed I have learned many other needle arts and taken many classes but I have always returned to embroidery as my favorite. I am the happiest with a needle in my hand. I enjoy hand Embroidery, Smocking, French Hand Sewing and Machine sewing. With encouragement from a stitching friend I started stitching art pieces to sell in 2008. I have participated in Spring Daze as well as Lazy Daze in Cary, NC. I have also taught Embroidery Classes at Jordan Hall Arts Center and am teaching classes at the new Cary Art Center in Cary. I am an active member and past president of the Gifted Hands of Cary, a local chapter of the Embroiders Guild of America and the current president and co-founder of the Hearts of Carolina, a local chapter of the Smocking Arts Guild of America. I have won numerous ribbons at the NC State Fair for my stitching and sewing.
